I’m a chiropractor, and I get asked this question a lot: “I’m 22 weeks and my lower back is killing me — is it safe to see a chiropractor while pregnant?”
Straight answer: yes. postpartum care is safe during pregnancy, and it can make a real difference in how you feel for the rest of your pregnancy and into labour.
Why Your Body Changes So Much During Pregnancy
As your baby grows, your centre of gravity shifts forward. Your pelvis tilts, your lower back arches more, and the ligaments around your hips and pelvis start to loosen thanks to relaxin. All of this is normal, but it can create tension and pull your body out of alignment.
One of the most common things I see is the “pregnancy waddle.” That’s not just a meme. Your body widens its stance to compensate for the forward pull, and the muscles around your hips and lower back have to work much harder than they normally would. The result is aches, stiffness, and the feeling that your legs just aren’t cooperating the way they used to.
That waddle is your body adapting. It doesn’t mean you have to live with the discomfort.
What a Prenatal Chiropractic Visit Looks Like
If you’ve never seen a chiropractor before, the idea of “getting adjusted” can feel intimidating, especially when you’re pregnant. Here’s what happens in my office.
First, I do a full assessment. I want to understand where you’re feeling tight, how your pelvis is sitting, and what movements are causing you pain. Everything is tailored to your stage of pregnancy.
For the actual adjustment, you won’t be lying flat on your back. Instead, I use specialized positioning. Many patients lie on their side with a pillow between their knees for support. Some prefer kneeling on a table designed for prenatal work. The goal is always the same: gently improve how your pelvis and spine are moving, without any pressure on your belly.
The adjustments are gentle. I’m using low-force techniques to release tension in the muscles around your hips and pelvis, and to improve how your sacroiliac joints and pubic symphysis are moving.
Most patients feel immediate relief afterward. Less tightness in the lower back, easier walking, less of that nagging hip ache. The effects tend to build over a few visits as your body learns to move in a more balanced way.
How Chiropractic Care Supports Labour Preparation
Beyond feeling better day to day, prenatal chiropractic care can help prepare your body for labour. When your pelvis is well-aligned and mobile, your baby has more room to descend into the optimal position. That’s not a guarantee of anything, labour is complex, but it’s one factor you can actually influence.
I also give patients practical movement strategies they can use at home: stretches that target the hip flexors and piriformis, guidance on how to sit and stand without aggravating existing pain, and simple exercises to keep the pelvic floor engaged.
